The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Basiru Ajibola, has said the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State will clearly reveal which political party truly commands the support of the people.
AFRESH247 recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, August 8, 2026, for the state governorship election.
Ajibola made the disclosure at a meeting of former legislators from Osun State who were elected on the platform of the APC into the State House of Assembly and the National Assembly, held in Osogbo on Sunday.
The meeting, he said, was convened to formally establish a structure and steering committee for the body ahead of the 2026 governorship election and the 2027 general elections.
He added that the gathering will strengthening internal cohesion and developing strategies to ensure the victory of the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the August 8, 2026 election, as well as working for the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
He said, “This meeting is to formally create a structure and the steering committee for that body to be able to ensure that we strategize and work for the victory of our party in the August 8, 2026 election for our candidate Bola Oyebamiji, and also to work for the success of our party in the 2027 election to President Bola Tinubu.
“This is a gathering of people who have contested elections in the various constituencies and have won. We belive that they are the people who have control of the grassroots and will be able to work for the success of our party.
“We have here people who have been former legislators, who have also been supporters of different aspirants all of them are in the same group here doing a meeting that is evidence of the cohesion that we have, for you to have about sixty former legislators in one roof belonging to different aspirants.
“Right now there is no issue of aspirant we already have a candidate and all of us are working towards the success of that candidate in the election.
“When it’s August 8 we will know who is popular between their rudderless party.”
Meanwhile, a former Speaker of the Osun House of Assembly, Hon. Mojeed Alabi, said the gathering marked a new chapter of cohesion among former legislators, noting that they have agreed to function as a single team on matters of governance and leadership.
In his words, “We want to be recognised as a united forum that can speak with one voice on matters that affect the development of the state and we have resolved that from today, we shall henceforth continue to speak along that line as part of the resolution of today’s meeting is to be a single team of former legislators and on matters that is about governance and leadership in Osun we resolved to be united and speak in one voice so that our opinion our view will become relevant in the scheme of thought.
“We resolved among ourselves that we will remain solid behind the candidate of our party, the All Progressive Congress and we will continue to team and meet all categories of leaders and all categories of aspirants who are not eventually favored to be picked as the candidate, all members and leadership of the party at the state and federal level to make sure that all issues about the selection of candidates during the last gubernatorial primary election were amicably solved in a manner that will ensure victory for our party when election is held on the 8th day of August 2026.”
