The United States Department of State has issued a security alert to American citizens residing in Nigeria following the escalation of hostilities between them and Iran.
In a statement issued on Monday, US authorities urged Americans abroad to remain vigilant amid ongoing military operations involving Iran.
“Following the launch of US combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate,” the advisory stated.
The alert warned that Americans could face travel disruptions due to periodic airspace closures linked to the unfolding crisis.
The State Department advised citizens worldwide to exercise increased caution and also encouraged them to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely security updates and to follow the “U.S. Department of State Security Updates for US Citizens” WhatsApp channel for further information.
The advisory comes after reports by Iranian state and local media confirmed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, following airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel. Several other senior Iranian officials were also reported killed in the strikes.
In response, Iran reportedly launched multiple missiles targeting US bases in Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, vowing to avenge the deaths of its Supreme Leader and other regime officials.
While speaking during a live broadcast while the attacks were ongoing on Saturday, US President, Donald Trump, said he was determined to eliminate members of the Iranian regime. He also urged Iranian citizens to take control of their government once military operations concluded.
