Former Labour Party Presidential candidate and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi has accused Nigeria’s political leadership of focusing more on the 2026 elections while the country falls under siege of insurgents and kidnappers.
In a statement released on his X handle on Monday, Obi alleged that the ruling party is more preoccupied with snatching and grabbing the next election than addressing the wave of terror that has reached the nation’s capital.
“The ruling class are instead devastatingly more preoccupied with how to snatch, grab, and run away with the next election,”he said.
He highlighted several recent tragedies to illustrate the deteriorating security situation, specifically citing a brutal attack on the Ngoshe community in Borneo state during which terrorists reportedly killed several security personnel and abducted more than 100 women and children.
He lamented that the sacrifices of soldiers are often passed over in silence and called for a new standard where fallen heroes are given dignified burials received by the nation’s top political authorities, saying “The sacrifice of our brave and dedicated soldiers is passed in silence. I look forward to the day when our fallen soldiers are given the dignified burials they deserve, with their bodies received and honoured by the nation’s leaders and political authorities.”
Obi concluded by stating that Nigerians deserve leadership that puts safety and welfare above political maneuvering, adding that ”These are not just news items. Nigerians deserve commitment and leadership that puts their safety and welfare first. It is time to restore security, dignity, and hope to every corner of this nation.”
He thereby urged the government to move beyond electoral politics and fulfill its primary constitutional responsibility to secure the lives and property of every citizen.
