The Department of Mass Communication of the Federal Polytechnic Ede (FPE) has organized its 3rd orientation programme for the 2025/2026 academic session, bringing together over 1,700 both full-time and part-time students.
The event, which took place on Wednesday at the school’s S.O. Babalola hall was declared open by the Department’s Students’ Adviser, Hajia Amina, followed by the address of the departmental president, Comrade Abdulazeez Uthman who challenged the freshers to be proactive and dedicated as they begin their journey in the world of media and communication.

The Head of Department, Dr. Kazeem Oyedeji, alongside several departmental lecturers, including Mr. Olanihun Zachariah, Mr. Raji Habeeb, Mr. Johnathan, and Mrs. Juliet, were in attendance to welcome the students into the department.
Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of the Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Mrs. Abisola Ariwodola, emphasized the weight of the profession, charging students to be guided by the strict ethics of mass communication.
She stressed that a journalist’s image is defined by their presentation, time management, and professional manners.
She said, “Mass communication is the fourth estate of the realm. You must identify what you want to do early, find a mentor, and always seek your lecturers’ guidance. Even in photojournalism, remember that a picture speaks a thousand words.”
Also speaking, Dr. Funmi Ojo highlighted the diverse fields within the department, including Advertising, Public Relations, Broadcasting, and Content Creation.
Earlier, the Examination Officer, Mr. Adeyemo (Access), provided a technical breakdown of CGPA calculations, from Distinction down to Probation. He issued a stern warning against examination malpractice, noting that the institution has a zero-tolerance policy towards it.
“As a journalist writing a story, you are portraying the image of this department, Once you are caught in malpractice, it is over. Avoid it at all costs,” he said.
