President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the resignation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, bringing his tenure to an end.
According to a source within the Presidency, Egbetokun stepped down after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
He is set to be succeeded by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Departmemt(CID) Annex in Lagos.
Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police on 19th of June 2023, with his appointment letter confirmed by the Police Council on 31st of October 2023.
At the time of his appointment, he was 58yrs old and originally scheduled to retire on the 4th of September 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly allowed him to complete a full four-year term unless removed by the president. Under that provision, he was expected to remain in office until 31 October 2027.
