The Depot Nigerian Army in Osogbo has opened a full investigation into allegations that some of its newly recruited soldiers assaulted students of Osun State University on Monday.
The incident, which sparked protests in Osogbo, with UNIOSUN students and members of the National Association of Nigerian Students,NANS Southwest Zone, barricading Obokun Road.
They carried placards with messages such as “Students are not safe” and “We demand justice,” causing disruption to traffic until the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye, intervened and spoke with the students.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Depot’s Public Relations Officer, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, said the Commandant had directed a probe to determine what happened and to ensure that anyone responsible is held accountable under military law. The Army described the reported conduct as unacceptable and said it does not reflect the discipline expected of the personnel trained at the Depot.
“The Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, especially the youth, who are the future of the nation. Any conduct that falls short of that mandate is unacceptable,” the statement read.
It added, “No student or law-abiding citizen should ever feel unsafe or be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by those entrusted with the security of lives and property.”
The command also called on the NANS Southwest Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, to submit all available evidence and witness accounts to support the investigation. The Commandant further indicated a willingness to meet with NANS leaders to discuss the matter and find a resolution.
The Army assured that any officer found culpable would face appropriate military sanctions, stating that the institution remains committed to protecting citizens and upholding its core values.
