The Benin Traditional Council has announced severe disciplinary actions against a palace queen, high-ranking chiefs, and staff members following an unauthorised visit by social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the Council, Frank Irabor, the Palace condemned the incident, which occurred on March 6, 2026, as a desecration of the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II. The Council emphasized that the palace is governed by sacred protocols and is not a venue for frivolous content creation.
As part of the sanctions, a palace staff member identified as Mr. Omuemu has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force. He is expected to be charged to court for allegedly aiding the unauthorised entry and causing a breach of peace. Additionally, a chief linked to the breach has been placed on indefinite suspension from all palace duties.
The Council further revealed that the palace queen involved in the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings in accordance with Benin customs and traditions. The statement noted that these proceedings could potentially lead to her formal removal from palace.
According to the Council, Peller and his entourage entered the grounds without requisite permission, leading to conduct that caused significant embarrassment.
While the influencer was invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to present his side of the story, he reportedly failed to honour the invitation.
The Benin Traditional Council has now demanded an unreserved written apology from the influencer for the distress caused to the palace and its subjects. The statement warned that the Council would not hesitate to pursue legal action should he fail to comply with the directive.
