The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, has ordered students to proceed on a three-week mid semester break, following protests against the institution’s new transportation system.
The directive which was approved by the University Senate, takes place with immediate effect. In a statement issued on Tuesday by the school’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju said the decision became necessary after student demonstrations escalated into unruly conduct, including the obstruction of major access roads and harassment of other road users.
According to the statement, management made several efforts to engage students and appeal for calm, but the situation continued to raise safety concerns for the university community and the public.
“Consequently, and in the interest of restoring order, ensuring safety and creating an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue, Senate has directed the University Management to ask all students to proceed on a three-week mid-semester break with immediate effect,” Olarewaju said.
Students have been instructed to vacate their halls of residence immediately. The University said management will use the break period to engage relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised and restore normalcy on campus.
Parents and guardians were thereby advised to make necessary arrangements for their children and wards, while students were urged to remain law-abiding and use the period responsibly.
“Accordingly, parents and guardians are kindly advised to take note of this development and make the necessary arrangements for their children and wards. Students are enjoined to remain law-abiding and use this period responsibly,” he said.
Olarewaju added that the University remains committed to students’ welfare and to maintaining a peaceful academic environment. Further updates will be communicated as appropriate.
