Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced worry about Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, noting that political leaders seem more preoccupied with the 2027 elections than protecting citizens’ lives and welfare.
In a post shared on his social media page on Tuesday, Obi lamented that school pupils kidnapped in Borno and Oyo states are still being held captive. He noted that two weeks after their abductions, the children had still not been freed.
While the victims remain with their abductors, he observed that government efforts appear limited to announcing a rescue taskforce instead of acting to secure their quick release.
The former governor of Anambra State pointed out multiple attacks in different parts of the country as proof that the security situation is getting worse.
Obi also drew attention to the recent kidnap of 46 people from three schools in Ahoro-Esinle Community, Oriire LGA near Ogbomoso, Oyo State. The victims include 39 students, seven teachers and a school principal.
According to him, “Even with all these painful incidents happening, we politicians are still fixated on the next election, giving more weight to political goals than to the safety and lives of our children and other Nigerians”.
He thereby urged the authorities to take swift and firm steps to tackle insecurity and ensure citizens, especially children, are shielded from kidnappers, terrorists and other criminal groups.
